Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has cleared the way for night flights to Biratnagar Airport in view of the growing number of travellers in the approaching festival season.
According to airport authorities, all the preparations for night flights have been completed. Currently, flights from and to the airport are operated till 6:00 pm.With this, the number of flights from the airport will go up to 30 per day, providing service to around 2,000 passengers. Currently, the airport has been providing around 17 flights each day carrying around 1,200 passengers.“We have arranged all equipment for night flight,” said CAAN’s Biratnagar office chief Debananda Yadav, adding, “Approach lights have been installed on the runway and all other equipment including VOR, DOE and those used in control-room have also been repaired and made ready for use.” Yadav informed the equipment had been imported from the US.“As these equipment are new and reliable, the planes can take off and land two-way at the airport in any season now,” he said. Earlier, airplanes used to land and take off only from the west as supporting equipment was dysfunctional. Owing to only one route on the runway, the planes were also forced to return when air traffic was busy.Meanwhile, authorities have also initiated the process of acquiring land in the eastern side of the airport to expand and upgrade the 1600-runway. Likewise, taxi, way, and parking area in the runway have also been constructed to manage the increasing air traffic.
