Trekking can generate employment


KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal during the 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) today urged the trekking agencies to lobby strongly for the development and required support for the trekking agencies.

“Nepal is the most attractive tourist destination in the world,” said PM Nepal adding that the trekking agents with their joint effort can work on the development of trekking sector.

He also said that the trekking sector can generate higher employment and along with it also has possibilities to attract more tourists through adventure activities like paragliding, canoying, skydiving etc. Meanwhile, Sitaram Sapkota, president of TAAN urged to minimize trekking charges for the promotion and attract more tourists in Nepal.

“There are countries which does not take trekking charge for mountains lower than 6500 meters and allows permits only whereas Nepal charges even for mountains lower than 6500 Meter,” said Sapkota. He also focused on the declaring tourism industry into national industry.

Prachanda Man Shrestha, ceo of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), focused on advancement and improvements of trekking sector and also develop trekking to terai region also along with the high altitude. At the mean time, Yogendra Shakya, Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011 coordinator focused on five areas that is being focused for the NTY 2011.

He said the NTY committee is now more focused on sanitation programme, airport infrastructure development, border town planning, and bring airlines for NTY 2011. Kishore Thapa, secretary at Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) focused for the promotion of terai tourism and village tourism. He also informed about the Great Himalayan Trail getting mentioned and declared as new tourism products.
