Tourism can bring Nepal together

Tourism can play a vital role in bringing the nation of Nepal together and strengthening its economy and society, according to industry figures.

This concept is the foundation of the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 initiative, which received support from the UN and government representatives at the recent Asian Tourism Ministers' Conclave in Kathmandu.

Madhav Kumar Nepal, prime minister of Nepal at the time, met with UN World Tourism Organisation secretary general Taleb Rifai last month to highlight the industry's potential to boost economic growth and social harmony.

Attendees at the recent event in Kathmandu highlighted the importance of cooperation between different destinations in the region.

Mr Rifai said: 'Intra-regional tourism, which in south Asia accounts for 34% of all arrivals, is increasingly important and requires coordinated policy responses.

'This conclave offers a constructive platform from which to exchange ideas on how to collectively boost international tourist arrivals and increase intra-regional tourist flows across south Asia.'

Travellers planning a trip to Nepal can also visit some of its neighbouring countries, such as India and China.
