Pemba Doma Sherpa remembered


Everest Summiteers' Assocaition (ESA) on May 22, 2008, organised a condolence meet on the first death anniversary of late Pemba Doma Sherpa who died last year while returning down from the successful summit of Mt. Lhotse. Government officials and people from the mountaineering fraternity remembered the courageous Sherpa woman, who was also the first Nepalese women to scale Mt. Everest from both sides. Speaking on the condolence meet, Dinesh Hari Adhikari, joint secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, emphasised on the need of proper rescue mechanism to further promote our adventure tourism. Adhikari also informed government plans of constructing the statue of late Pema in Namche Bazaar and Kathmandu.

On the occasion, Mr. Wangchu Sherpa, president of ESA, handed over Rs. 30,000 to late Pemba's brother Nima Nuru Sherpa, to support the education of late Pemba's daughter. Apart from Mt. Everest and Mt. Lhotse, late Pemba also climbed Mr. Cho Oyu in 2005
