Nepal-Tibet destination tourism promotion

 

KATHMANDU: Dr Wang from Tibet Tourism Administration highlighted the possibilities of extending the visit of Chinese tourists to Nepal, who come to Tibet, by providing adequate information to tour operators based in major tourist generating areas of China.

Addressing the Tourism Promotion Interaction Programme organised by the Consulate General of Nepal in coordination with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Tibet Tourism Administration (TTA), he said said Lhasa could be a hub for Chinese tourists to come to Nepal if sufficient air transportation facilities are created with easy frontier formalities.

Dr Wang said TTA is very hoping to work together with Nepalese authorities and Nepal Tourism Board to promote tourism in Nepal and Tibet. He also voiced the need for regular exchange trips between authorities of the two countries to explore and implement tourism promotion.

In his address in the opening session, NTB CEO Prachanda Man Shrestha recalled his visit to Tibet during 1985 and 1994 in the context of tourism development and expressed great satisfaction at witnessing the development of tourism infrastructure and quality of facilities for tourism in Tibe. He said there was a need to work together to match the changed global dimensions of tourism. He added that Nepal and Tibet have been able to draw the attention of global tourist generating market as a combined destination.

Shrestha said this was the right time to work together to develop combined tour packages for Nepal and Tibet for Chinese and tourists from other countries. Along with combined tour packages, joint publicity promotion for wider information dissemination, improvement of air and surface transport for convenient accessibility and facilitative policy coordination should be instituted.

He proposed to have three tier cooperation in tourism: first, mechanism established between bilateral government authorities to be activated for broader discussion and policy coordination; second, memorandum of understanding to be established between promotional agencies to disseminate flow of regular information, and third, establishing closer business-to-business ties between tour operators and handling agencies.

The programme — organised in Lhasa — was attended by airline representative from Air Chinam who announced his company’s full support to tourism and mentioned increasing flight frequency between Lhasa and Kathmandu.

The programme was organised to inform Tibetan tourism authorities, travel operators, airlines and media about Nepali tourism and promote Nepal-Tibet destination among international tourists to make Nepal Tourism Year-2011 a success. More than forty representatives from travel trade of Tibet, Air China, China Southern Airlines and Lhasa based media attended.

Welcoming the guests, Consul General Nagindra Upadhyay from Consulate General of Nepal at Lhasa expressed his gratitude to authorities of Tibet Tourism Administration, Nepal Tourism Board, and Foreign Affaires Office of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the PR China for their support in organising this meeting for the first time to promote tourism between two countries.

He mentioned the tremendous potential of getting benefit from tourism promotion of Nepal and Tibet as it has unique elements of attraction not only for Chinese tourists but international tourists also.
