Italian climber dies near summit of Nepal mountain

An Italian climber fell to his death just metres from the summit of the world's seventh highest mountain in western Nepal, the tourism ministry said on Friday.

The ministry named the man as Sergio Dalla Longa, 48, from Nembro in northern Italy, and said he had died on Sunday while trying to climb the 8,167-metre (26,794-feet) Mount Dhaulagiri.

Dalla Longa fell from an altitude of about 8,100 metres, the ministry said in a statement without giving further details.

Dozens of foreign mountaineering expeditions are trying to climb different Himalayan peaks during the current climbing season, which started in March.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest.
